What is Cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy or Cryosurgery, is a non-surgical treatment that uses intense cold to eliminate unwanted tissue, such as warts and lesions.
It’s a simple technique, which avoids any cutting, there is a long history of use in human medicine and is now a frequent practice in veterinary care here at Knutsford Vets.
Cold treatment for your pet
In cryosurgery, we use a specialised instrument that delivers a focused spray of extremely cold liquid nitrogen to the targeted tissue.
The device’s precision helps minimise damage to healthy tissue surrounding the treatment area. The freezing process is rapid, usually requiring only a few seconds.
The treated tissue is then allowed to thaw before the freezing is repeated.
Is Cryotherapy painfull?
While cryosurgery is typically not painful, some animals might experience minor initial discomfort. If the treated area is sensitive, such as around the eyes, a sedative may be administered. We may also provide pain relief medication before your pet goes home to ensure their comfort.
What happens after Cryotherapy?
Following Cryotherapy treatment for your pet, the treated area may initially appear slightly inflamed and larger.
A scab will then develop, followed by a crust, which should detach naturally within 10 to 14 days. It’s crucial to prevent your pet from disturbing the area during healing. Depending on the location of the treated area, our team may suggest a protective collar or pet clothing.
We ask that you provide us with a photo update once the crust has fallen off, along with a brief description of your pet’s recovery. These can both be done via our WhatsApp service.
Naturally please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
How many treatments does my pet need?
Its hard to say depending on the area and condition we are treating your pet for with Cryotherapy. In some cases, a second treatment may be necessary.
We recommend a follow-up treatment is carried out within four weeks of the first if required.
Subsequent treatments are usually less uncomfortable because the nerves in the area have already been desensitized. If the initial treatment required sedation, it may be the case your pet can tolerate the second treatment without it.
