Ear Examinations for your pet

A video otoscope use a rigid, compact endoscope equipped with a camera to project magnified images onto a monitor.  Fibreoptic cables within the scope provide intense illumination of the ear canal. Furthermore, a built-in channel permits the introduction of tools and fluids, facilitating both the collection of samples from deeper regions of the ear canal and the removal of foreign material and debris.

This device aids in the diagnosis and treatment of ear infections and abnormal growths.  Its irrigation and suction feature enables us to clear away material lodged within the external canal and middle ear. Therefore, the video otoscope offers several key benefits: deep flushing of the ear canal (removing stubborn debris), assessing and removing debris from behind a ruptured eardrum, and the diagnosis and biopsy of ear canal tumours and polyps.

When might Video Otoscopy be used?

A video otoscope is particularly helpful for cleaning or diagnosing problems in ears that are diseased. It does require the patient to be under general anaesthesia.  This allows the patient to be perfectly still, preventing damage to the delicate structures of the eardrum during procedures. It also protects the patient’s airway from fluids that might drain from the ear into the throat (through the Eustachian tube) during irrigation. While the safest anaesthetic methods and monitoring are employed, no anaesthesia is completely risk-free.

Is a Video Otoscopy safe?

Video otoscopy is considered safe and is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing our patients to return home the same day. Infrequent side effects associated with video otoscopy can include temporary hearing reduction, dizziness, a head tilt, or difficulty closing the eye on the treated side.

What are the benefits of Video Otoscopy?

Ear procedures using video otoscopy offer several advantages. They are generally considered the safest, most affordable, and most effective way to diagnose and treat serious ear conditions.  Our veterinarian team will discuss the options with you if they believe it’s the right course of action for your pet.
