What To Do When You Find a Stray Dog

However, to ensure the best possible care for these dogs and to comply with the latest guidance from Cheshire East Council, we kindly ask members of the public who find a stray dog to contact the local authority directly rather than bringing the dog to us.

Contact the Local Authority
If you find a stray dog, please contact Cheshire East Council’s Stray Dog Service. This helps ensure the dog receives the appropriate care and has the best chance of being reunited with its owner.
You can take the dog to Acorn Kennels, the council’s designated facility, located at:
They provide a reception service until 10 pm, including weekends, making it convenient for you to hand over the stray.
Information Required by the Council
When you contact the council, they will ask for the following information to assist in processing the stray dog:
- Your full name, address, and telephone number.
- The location, time, and date where the dog was found.
- Any distinguishing features of the dog.
Providing this information helps ensure that the dog is handled correctly and has the best chance of being reunited with its owner.
Limited Collection Service
Please note that Cheshire East Council’s collection service operates from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
Outside these hours, you may need to hold onto the dog until the next working day unless you are able to transport it to Acorn Kennels directly.
