Our Positive Steps for a Greener Practice
// committed to greener practices //
Our positive steps
At Knutsford Vets we’re committed to practical, transparent sustainability. From rooftop solar and reusable theatre equipment to greener purchasing and smart energy systems, we’re reducing waste and emissions while protecting clinical standards.
Below you’ll find the concrete actions we’ve taken, why they matter, and how they benefit you and your pet.
// pride in our practice //
Powering the practice responsibly
- Rooftop Solar
We generate on-site electricity with rooftop solar panels. This clean power runs the practice during the day and lowers our reliance on grid energy. It’s a visible step towards a sustainable veterinary practice in Cheshire.
- High-efficiency heating and cooling (HVAC)
Our high-efficiency heating and cooling systems are designed to use less energy for the same comfort. Where possible they are powered by our solar. Efficient HVAC keeps temperatures stable for patients and people while reducing our carbon footprint.
- Heat-recovery ventilation (HRV)
Heat-recovery ventilation brings in fresh air while capturing warmth from outgoing air. That means better indoor air quality and less wasted energy. HRV supports a calm, comfortable environment for pets—especially during longer stays.
- Smart LED lighting
Low-power, smart LED lighting provides bright, accurate illumination in clinical and client areas. Sensors and controls help ensure lights are only on when needed. LEDs last longer, reduce maintenance and cut electricity use.
- Built-in efficiency: SIPs extension
Our extension is built with structural insulated panels (SIPs). These highly insulated panels reduce heat loss in winter and keep rooms cooler in summer. Better insulation means less energy for heating and cooling, with no compromise on comfort.
Reducing single-use where safe
Reusable B. Braun sterilisation containers
We’ve adopted reusable B. Braun sterilisation containers to limit reliance on single-use sterilisation pouches and plastics. The containers protect instruments during processing and storage. This reduces waste at source while maintaining sterility and safety.
Reusable, sterilisable surgical gowns
Where clinically appropriate, our team wears reusable, sterilisable gowns. These garments are designed for repeated use and robust decontamination. They help us cut disposable textile waste without affecting infection control.
Note: We always retain single-use items where they are clinically required for patient safety.

Greener clinical practice
Low-flow anaesthesia and cleaner air
We use low-flow anaesthesia wherever appropriate to reduce the volume of anaesthetic gases released. This helps limit anaesthetic pollutants in the veterinary environment while maintaining stable, safe anaesthesia for patients.
Responsible antimicrobial use
We follow responsible antimicrobial stewardship. Prescribing is targeted and evidence-based, with clear client guidance. This protects patient outcomes today and helps preserve antibiotic effectiveness for the future.
Stock control that prevents waste
We manage stock carefully to minimise out-of-date items. Better rotation and ordering reduce waste, cost and unnecessary deliveries.
Electronic paper trails
We default to electronic records, forms and communications where suitable. This curbs printing, simplifies audits and speeds up care—without losing the option of paper where clients need it.
Responsible purchasing and waste
Environmentally compliant suppliers and bulk buying
We prefer suppliers who meet strong environmental standards and are transparent about performance. Where sensible, we purchase waiting-room items in bulk to cut packaging and reduce multiple deliveries, helping address our “Scope 3” footprint.
Greener packaging at reception and dispensary
We use paper bags, cardboard tablet boxes and paper envelopes in place of plastics where appropriate. We now also stock biodegradable poo bags to support responsible dog walking with less environmental impact.
Composting coffee grounds
Coffee grounds from staff areas are composted rather than binned. It’s a small, simple switch that keeps organic waste out of general rubbish and supports soil health.
Waste segregation and recycling
We segregate waste so most non-clinical materials can be recycled, while clinical waste is handled correctly and safely. Clear bins and staff training reduce contamination and keep our workspace tidy.
// Our journey together //
Cleaner journeys to the practice
We provide rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers to encourage lower-emission visits. Clients, team members and visiting professionals can top up while at the practice.
Convenient charging supports more sustainable travel choices in East Cheshire.
// Our environment matters //
Nurturing local biodiversity
We’re committed to increasing biodiversity around the practice. Planting choices favour pollinator-friendly species and seasonal interest. Small habitats—planters, nesting opportunities and undisturbed corners—give wildlife a foothold. These steps bring nature closer for clients and colleagues and support a healthier local environment.
Preventive healthcare that avoids unnecessary visits
We champion preventive healthcare and owner empowerment. Proactive monitoring, tailored vaccination and parasite programmes, good nutrition and lifestyle advice can reduce avoidable illness.
Clear guidance helps you manage minor issues at home and know when a vet visit is needed. The result is healthier pets, fewer unplanned trips and a lighter environmental footprint from travel and treatments.
// Only positive impact//
What this means for you and your pet
- Consistent comfort: Efficient HVAC, HRV and SIPs construction keep rooms at steady temperatures.
- Cleaner air: Low-flow anaesthesia and fresh-air systems improve the environment in clinical areas.
- Less waste: Reusable containers and gowns, greener packaging and electronic paperwork reduce single-use materials.
- Convenient charging: Rapid EV chargers make it easy to visit in an electric vehicle.
- Practical products: Biodegradable poo bags and paper packaging support greener everyday choices.
- Fewer unplanned visits: Preventive care and clear advice help keep pets well year-round.
How we measure progress
We review our impact through regular audits, staff training and checks on supplier credentials. Findings guide updates to procedures, purchasing and waste segregation. We monitor use of anaesthetic gases, printing volumes and stock rotation to spot further gains.
We’re working towards the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme Environmental Sustainability merit and welcome feedback from clients and colleagues as we progress.
Safety first, always
Patient safety and quality of care come before everything else. Where single-use items are clinically required, we continue to use them.
Our approach is to reduce environmental impact without compromising infection control, sterility or clinical outcomes.
FAQ's
Do sustainable choices affect clinical care?
No. We only adopt changes that meet or exceed clinical standards. Where single-use remains best for safety, we use it.
Can I charge my EV during a visit?
Yes. Our rapid chargers are in the car park for client use while you’re with us. Please speak to reception on arrival.
How can clients help?
Choose active or lower-emission travel where possible, bring reusable carriers, recycle packaging from home-dispensed products, and follow our preventive care guidance to avoid unnecessary visits.
