Can having worms make your dog itchy?
Although there are a number of other more likely causes of itchiness in your dog, intestinal worms could be one of the potential causes. Behaviours that could link to itchiness caused by the presence of worms include any scratching of the rear end or rubbing or dragging their bottom on the ground. Generally speaking, scratching of the skin in other areas of the body is not caused by worms and will more likely be as a result of another skin condition.
Other symptoms of intestinal worms
Other potential signs that your dog may be suffering from an intestinal worm infestation can include the following: –
- Visible worms or eggs in your dog’s poo
- Vomiting with visible worms
- Bloating to the stomach
- Increased appetite
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Rough or dull coat
- Diarrhoea
How to prevent worms in your dog
You can prevent your dog from being infested by worms by giving them a regular worming treatment. It’s recommended to give your dog a wormer every three months. This will ensure that worms are removed before they get to a size which can cause discomfort or serious illness to your pet.
If you notice symptoms that could be caused by intestinal worms then you should give your dog their regular worming treatment immediately. If you’re unsure of the wormer that your dog requires then you should speak to your vet for advice. Once the wormer has been administered you will need to monitor your dog for signs that the worms have passed without issue.
Other potential causes of itchiness in dogs
If your dog has a general itchiness affecting other areas of their body rather than their behind, then this is likely caused by something else. Other potential causes of itchiness in your pet include: –
- Skin Infections
- Allergies
- External parasites, including fleas and ticks
- Injuries to the skin
- General pain
